Please explain the christian symbolism in your writing. Please... I am in the 8th grade and am writing a paper for my class.

Thank you,

Michel

      Dear Michel,

Because I'm a Christian myself, The Lord of the Rings has indeed come to include several values or symbols associated with Christianity. Know that it was not consciously so at first, as I write very impulsively. Yet this became rather conscious in the revisions.

I am somewhat wary of any form of written papers about my work (and the analysis it entails). But I will try to help you with the following (I'm assuming you are working on The Lord of the Rings).

Firstly, in my work the ideas of beauty or humility in simplicity and majesty correspond to what is my perception of these values as taught by my Faith in the Virgin Mary and the Order of Grace. A reader once compared Galadriel and the Virgin Mother under this mode, and I understand his idea. I leave it to you to find examples of this in the books.

Secondly, remember what Gandalf tells Frodo when the young Hobbit wonders aloud why Bilbo did not kill Gollum when he had the chance: it is Pity that moved him not to act. And think of Frodo's encounter with Gollum. While Samwise promptly wants to punish the wretched creature, Frodo will follow Bilbo's actions and spare him, moved by Pity. Pity is an important element of the Christian faith that can be obviously found all across the trilogy. Again, I leave to you the finding of specific, textual examples.

May this be enough and help you. I will not tell you more. And remember! Do not write too many papers about it! Sit by the fire to read the book and enjoy it as it is, if this you do. And if so, then you have my gratitude.

Sincerely,

J.R.R.T.
