Have you practised all the sexual acts you describe in your books?
My most excellent Carolina,
How can I reply to your deep question in
short? My words fail me... If you had read my correspondence, you would not have
asked me that question. What do you mean by «have I practiced all the sexual
acts I described in my books»? Do you mean in a physical sense? Or do you mean
in a mostly mental, imaginative manner? The answer cannot resolve in a few
lines.
I do believe that a writer must only speak of what he knows. And
yes! I have personally experienced ALL the sensations and emotions that I have
described
in my works, i.e. all the POSITIVE sensations. I am a great lover
of life. Nay, I'm the greatest lover of Life and Nature and I have sworn to obey
her laws. I cannot, I could not, it is not in my constitution to violate any of
her laws or to sin (yes, I have said «sin») against Life. Every form of Life is
sacred and I respect it in every single one of her manifestations. The
characters of my books are fictional, are made of ink and paper and I avail
myself of the sacred right of any writer to do with them as well as I please,
including chopping them to pieces and stew them for dinner.
I hope that
answers your question. I shall only add one quotation from one of my letters (to
my beloved, sensitive, and pusillanimous half): «I have never been an assassin,
and I never will.»
In faith,
D.A.F. de Sade
