What is it like?

What is it like being the king of France? How do you use your political powers to help people?  What is like to be a king? What is your most important accomplishment as a king? What is France like? Why do you like art? What is your colonial policy?

Monsieur,

You are asking pretty interesting questions and I will gladly answer them, even though you have not signed your letter. Is that very common in your time?

Being King of France is the most beautiful profession one could imagine. I’ve been King since I was nearly five years-old and I am close to seventy-seven now, and I enjoyed every part of it. Being King is not always the easiest thing, unlike the common people, the King cannot do whatever he feels like. He has to remember, always, that God placed him on the throne not for the King to benefit from his position, but for the sake of France. A King is always in the public eye, he has to display himself all the time, to everyone. In some occasions, such a contraint is difficult, but it has to be this way. The King is the one who knows better what his good for his people and for that, the King gives everything.

My most important accomplishement would be, without a doubt, the Edict de Fontainebleau in 1685. By this Edict, the Kingdom had only one official religion, the only one that is true, Catholicism. I’m really proud of this achievement.

France is the most beautiful and powerful kingdom of the world. Her people, her religion, everything makes it that way, but I’m guessing you knew that I would tell you so!

Art is very important not only to me, but to the Kingdom. Not only do I like arts and always have, but the work and skill of artists show the strenght and the power of France.

As for the colonial policy, it is a very complex subject and I cannot dream of explaining everything here. Let me say that the colonies are part of the Kingdom, they have a lot of ressources that France needs. Although I would have preferred the explorations to stop in America, I am very proud of the territory I have acquired there. My subjects who live there are just as much my subjects than any other one who lives on the continent, here in the Kingdom.

I hope this answers your questions. Don’t hesite to write again if you have any other questions. It is always a pleasure for me to be able to write to people of your time.
