| When exactly did you come to France in 1944? | ||||

| Sir, to be very precise, I shall tell you I was away from France between June 17th 1940 and June 14th 1944, when I crossed the Channel onboard the Combattante, to reach a Normandy beach and eventually the city of Bayeux. Now that I am an old man, I understand the days of 1944, from mid June to the end of August when Paris came to liberate itself, were the best of my life, in spite of the fact I was simply exhausted.
