      Dear Charles de Gaulle,

Did you believe it was your own personal responsibility to lead the French Resistance or do you believe someone else would have led them?

Charles de Gaulle

      Dear sir,

In the dark days of June 1940, prior to undertaking my sacred task, to liberate France from the Nazis, I had made sure nobody was more qualified than myself to take the lead of a force that was to maintain France in the common struggle. The sad truth was that I was the only member of the last legitimate French governement (before Petain's treacherous cabinet), willing and able to resist. Hence, when Churchill recognized me as the leader of the Free French, the shortlist from which my named was picked, was very short: in fact my name was the only one available...

Later, of course, Churchill and Roosevelt tried to replace me with other French personnalities whom they found more... manageable, shall I say, speaking from their perspective. But by then, I had been accepted by all the French Resistants as their only leader, towards their sole goal: the liberation of France.

Globally, I shall say that France was lucky enough, to have the general de Gaulle handy...

Yours,

Charles de Gaulle
