Bonjour, je suis une Américaine vraiment obsédée de vos livres... Je voudrais savoir ce que vous pensez vraiment des Américains. Surtout aujourd'hui. Pensez-vous qu'on lutte effectivement contre l'axe du Mal en forme de Ben Laden?

Since you told me you are American, I hope you will not mind if I write back in my native language. I am still not much confident with my French (at least I do not have to speak it on Dialogus, for I dislike its sound) and my true formal lessons, given to me by my kind mother, date back from a rather long time ago.

You are asking my opinion about Americans. This is a dangerous question, and a delicate matter. Honestly I never liked their English accent, but is this truly important? I will obviously never dare to judge the American people as a whole. Whatever I say would inevitably end up as a grotesque generalization. I have known admirable Americans, and I have known less than admirable ones. Americans dared to issue a pirate edition of The Lord of the Rings, but Americans fought against it and I am grateful to them for that. I fancy that whatever of them I see on the television (which I never watch) I would find superficial, but this is a problem intrinsic to the television phenomenon, not to the Americans.

Bin Laden. That madman makes an Axis of Evil by himself, and if this political puppet is ever caught another one will likely emerge, and this masquerade will always continue. Fighting him is much like using a Ring of Power without asking yourself what is it doing there in your pocket when you found it. You have your chance for power and pride, you seize it and you make use of it, but you don't ask yourself who put it there in the first place and why. This world is so full of little Saurons... or more likely filthy Orcs, because I do not think humanely possible to be as evil as the Dark Lord, even though human nature IS corrupted.
