| Chère Mademoiselle Claire, You are asking me a most difficult question. If I could say that I have a favorite work could I continue composing. Each composition satisfies the need of the moment. My present compositions I am working on several so overwhelm my mind that any distraction is excruciating. I honestly must confess that I am not in a position to say. If you are a violinist should I say my pianoforte sonatas were the most agreeable to me? You, Mademoiselle, are in a better position to judge them I believe so you must tell me. I can only say that my quartets continue to preoccupy me, my piano sonatas less. There will be something new, there must be! that will make the human mind soar above our wretched miseries...
