Ludwig Van Beethoven |
Dear correspondant, This is a question I hardly dare answer for fear of neglecting just now one of my masters. I cannot forget the immediate, great ones, Haydn, Mozart and Bach that every piano teacher must acknowledge for his extraordinary Well-tempered Klavier. All my masters live with me here in their portraits. Of course now and here, the Italiens are masters at vocal writing and Vienna can't get enough of them! I would say however that morning, noon and night is overdoing it! In church music, I consider the Italian Palestrina the master of all. But finally it is before the genius of Handel whom I cannot study enough that I bow deeply in utmost humility. I am sure you can understand how impossible it is for me to be more specific.
